Overview

ArtistaCUBA is an American company dedicated to the study and promotion of Cuban art. ArtistaCUBA is focused on displaying contemporary Cuban folk art which best represents the island and its culture.

Company founder and curator, Jorge Armenteros collects art from all over the island. Mr. Armenteros selects art which illustrates, as he puts it "...the spirit of the Cuban people, their creativity, inspiration, sensuality, and zest for life. Cuba is a hot and secluded island where mere survival demands determination and perseverance. Cubans," Mr. Armenteros says, "refurbish vintage American cars with bicycle parts and bubble gum; plumbing is often repaired with tin foil, and simple tasks require remarkable leaps of the imagination."

"Cubans transcend the difficulties of their daily lives and find joy in the more ethereal world of music, dance, love, sex, friends, family and the occasional drink of rum. In Cuba," Mr. Armenteros says, "nothing comes easy; creativity is a necessary tool for survival. The objective observer of Cuban life sees a very fine line between life and art."

The ArtistaCUBA collection includes works of fine art from world renown artists as well as rustic folk art made by untrained artists with rudimentary materials. The ArtistaCUBA paintings include Afro-Cuban, Abstract, Impressionist, Surrealist, Cubist, Realist and other techniques which have been uniquely expressed through artists living and working in Cuba. At its best, Cuban folk art is vivid, symbolic, sensual, and inspiring. In it, you will find a purity of appreciation for light, color, and life's simple pleasures. Cuban folk art evokes the same seductive and passionate emotions that are palpable to anyone who visits the island and meets its people.

Architecture, music, cigars, nature, food, and sex are all prevalent themes in Cuban art. What makes these themes uniquely Cuban is something only your senses can experience. The mission of ArtistaCUBA is to provide you with the opportunity to share the culture of a distant land that lies around the corner.

In 1995, Mr. Armenteros opened the first A Little Taste of Cuba, Cigar Parlor in Princeton, NJ. Over the next few years, successive parlors opened in New Hope, PA and Marietta, GA. This successful endeavor allowed Mr. Armenteros to develop and share his love of Cuban culture through distinctive design and retailing concepts. Mr. Armenteros has been studying and collecting Cuban art since 1996 while striving to decorate his cigar parlors in the most authentic, interesting, and vibrant way possible. "ArtistaCUBA was the natural evolution of my passion for Cuban culture and art," says Mr. Armenteros.
